Ayatollah 'Ali Khamenei is the most powerful political figure in
Iran not only because he is a religious leader but also because of
the constitution. Under Iran's constitution Khamenei can dismiss
the president.
Mesic is in a three day official visit to Tehran where he arrived on
Monday at the invitation of the Iranian President Mohmmad Khatami.
His visit is the first by a European head of state since Khatami's
landslide re-election with 77 percent of the vote earlier this
month.
Mesic told reporters him and Khamenei discussed general
international topics and agreed that all international problems
could be solved through agreements, and that wars should be avoided
and cooperation among peoples and countries enabled.
The Croatian President on Wednesday also met the Iranian parliament
speaker, Mahdi Karubi, to discuss cooperation between the two
parliaments. Mesic told reporters him and the Iranian officials
also discussed relations between Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The Croatian embassy in Iran said the Iranian party expressed
satisfaction with new and better relations between Croatia and
Bosnia-Herzegovina, as well as the position of Moslems in Croatia.
