Pankretic said on Wednesday Croatia would very soon have an
umbrella agriculture law envisaging the establishment of several
new institutions. Among these is a chamber of agriculture which
would comprise and promote the interests of peasant farms.
Agriculture and farmland legislation, which the government will
tackle soon, marks the beginning of land reform, Pankretic told
reporters. He announced an impending presentation of a new
agricultural development strategy.
The new law and all the measures of agricultural policy are aimed at
providing manufacturers with an adequate standard of living,
consumers with a stable and quality supply, and at promoting
ecology-friendly production.
The new farmland law intends to bring decision-making on state-
owned land to lower levels, namely from the county and ministry to
the level of town and municipal councils. This has been done because
people closer to the field are better acquainted with the
circumstances, said the minister.
