Mesic also endorsed a proposal to declare a Croatian anti-torture
week, which was put forward by representatives of the association.
The chairwoman of the Amnesty International Croatia executive
committee, Lana Horvat, said today's meeting with President Mesic
was one of the events the association was using to celebrate 40
years of activity. Amnesty International was established in London
on 30 May 1961 to promote human rights.
The anti-torture campaign, launched last October in 60 countries,
wraps up on Dec. 10. Its motto is "Do Something - Stop Torture: Let's
Make the World a Torture-Free Zone."
