ZAGREB, May 24 (Hina) - All party benches in the Croatian parliament on Thursday supported a bill on changes to the Family Act but most refused the regulation allowing the marriage of cousins in exceptional cases and with court
approval. Deputies of the Opposition's Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and the right bloc consisting of the Croatian Party of Rights and the Croatian Christian Democratic Union (HSP/HKDU) opposed the regulation saying it was "scandalous, bordering on incest." They also said "retarded children" were born in such marriages. The possibility of marriage between close relatives should be refused "in the interest of the protection of basic Christian values, morality and culture," most deputies said.
