ZAGREB, May 17 (Hina) - Some 30 workers of the metal-working factory
"Dalmacija" from Dugi Rat gathered in front of the government
building in Zagreb on Thursday morning to protest against a
proposal by the Croatian Privatisation Fund (HFP) on initiating
bankruptcy proceedings in the company.
The HFP was requested to initiate bankruptcy proceedings by the Tax
Administration, to which the factory owes some 40,000 kuna (about
DEM 10,000).
A union representative, Ivan Ribicic, said it was absurd bankruptcy
proceedings were initiated over such a small debt. The workers are
not opposing bankruptcy or the announced privatisation as long as
it will secure the continuation of production, he said.
Ribicic claims the current management of the company is incompetent
and the workers therefore demand that a new government board be
appointed as well as that they be given salaries they have not
received since 1996, worth 18 million kuna.
The workers have also requested that the Croatian Power Supply
(HEP), to which the factory owes 70 million kuna, give the company
the status of a privileged customer so that it could pay for power at
a price which is lower than the market price.
The owners of the company are HEP (44%), state funds (45%) and small
shareholders (11%).
The unionists and representatives of small shareholders met with
Economy Minister Goranko Fizulic.
