On April 6, the two countries signed an Agreement on Border
Crossings which will officially go into force once it is ratified by
the countries' parliaments but it has been effective since the day
of the signing.
All 27 road and railway crossings have the status of international
and not interstate crossings.
Twelve road and five railway crossings will serve only for freight
and passenger transport, eight will be used only for passenger
transport while two crossings at Neum (southern Bosnia-
Herzegovina) will have a special status - they will not be used for
the import or export of goods. Passage through the Neum corridor has
been regulated separately, the statement reads.
The check-points between the two countries are used for passenger
transport at the time of field work and religious events.
Some of the 44 check-points will become border crossings after the
two countries sign an agreement on local border traffic.
Negotiations on this agreement have started in March 2001, the
statement reads.
