ZAGREB, April 3 (Hina) - If Croatia wishes to join the European
Union, it must continue to implement the policy of reforms through
social partnership, European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC)
Secretary General Emilio Gabaglio told a press conference in Zagreb
Tuesday.
The role of Croatian trade unions could be crucial in the process of
Croatia's approaching Europe, ETUC official said.
During a three-day visit to Croatia, hosted by the Croatian
Association of Independent Trade Union (SSSH), Gabaglio held talks
with Croatian President Stipe Mesic, prime Minister Ivica Racan and
heads of the Croatian Association of Employers (HUP).
Gabaglio expressed satisfaction with talks with representatives of
the authorities and disappointment with talks with HUP
representatives, adding he had an impression that employers were
not ready to take their share of responsibility.
Gabaglio positively assessed cooperation with the SSSH, adding the
SSSH was the most representable Croatian federation by far,
gathering two thirds of workers organised in unions and clearly
oriented towards Europe.
