MOSTAR, April 9 (Hina) - Employees of Hercegovacka Bank on Monday
gathered in front of the bank's premises in Mostar in which the High
Representative last week introduced transitional administration,
suspended its staff and management, and blocked its accounts.
These measures, ordered by the international community's High
Representative Wolfgang Petritsch, were carried out with the
assistance of the NATO-led Stabilisation Force (SFOR) last
Friday.
On Monday, nobody answered telephones in the bank's administration
building, although the provisional administrator, Toby Robinson,
was expected to arrive at the offices.
Some 270 employees of the bank's branches did not show up for work
this morning, expecting administrator Robinson to provide answers
as to their future.
The staff of the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Co-operation
in Europe) came to their offices this morning in this southern city.
The OSCE offices are being guarded by SFOR armoured carriers.
The staff of the High-Representative's branch office in Mostar, who
were evacuated from the office last Friday, had to wait to return to
their offices.
Individuals and companies with accounts in Hercegovacka Bank on
Monday started to open new accounts in other banks, as the blocking
of Hercegovacka Bank made it impossible for the functioning of
payment operations in many Bosnian parts populated by Croats. This
also makes it more difficult for other banks to function.
Institutions of Bosnia-Herzegovina and its Croat-Muslim entity
(the Federation) face problems as Hercegovacka Bank was a deposit
bank for many of their accounts.
