ZAGREB, March 13 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament's House of
Representative on Tuesday adopted a law on the rights of Homeland
Defence War veterans by the majority of votes.
The passing of this law is a condition for the stand-by arrangement
set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The government made some compromises by amendments to the bill,
namely it agreed to extend the deadline for the privileged import of
vehicles from May 1 to June 1.
In line with the law, 100 percent disabled war veterans would keep
the right to be granted a car by the War Veterans' Ministry every
seventh year, while the families of killed soldiers would have one-
time privileged import of vehicles.
Disabled war veterans from the 2nd to 4th category of injuries to
their lower extremities would, depending on the degree of their
injury, have the right to import vehicles without paying customs
tariffs, excise taxes and Value Added Tax (VAT) every seventh
year.
Under the adopted law, soldiers and the families of killed,
imprisoned and missing soldiers would be exempt from paying VAT on
machines and equipment for economic and private businesses.
Representatives of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), the
Croatian Party of Rights (HSP), the Croatian Christian Democratic
Union (HKDU) and the Democratic Centre (DC) voted against the law
because they believe all veterans' benefits should be retained.
