ZAGREB, Feb 21 (Hina) - Croatia's ruling six-party coalition will
this week decide about the (non-)dissolution of the House of
Counties and the electoral law on local self-government, the
president of the Croatian Peasants' Party (HSS), Zlatko Tomcic,
told reporters after a coalition meeting on Wednesday.
The coalition failed to decide about the dissolution of the upper
house today because the meeting was not attended by the leaders of
all coalition parties, Tomcic said.
Not attending were Croatia Social Liberal Party's (HSLS) Drazen
Budisa, Istrian Democratic Assembly's (IDS) Ivan Jakovcic and
Croatian People's Party's (HNS), Vesna Pusic.
Tomcic said he personally believed Croatia needed an efficient
legislative system and faster adoption of legal regulations and
that was the main reason behind the stand that Croatia should have a
single-chamber parliament. Should the coalition decide to dissolve
the upper house, Tomcic believes the Croatian Democratic Union
(HDZ), which holds the majority of seats in the upper house, could
not block constitutional changes related to the dissolution of the
upper house.
