ZAGREB, March 7 (Hina) - Public Works, Reconstruction and Construction Minister Radimir Cacic will request the government to increase by 150 percent the number of houses that have to be rebuilt, whereby some 7,000 would be completed
by mid-2002, requiring the government to earmark $100 million. The minister said this would solve the issue of all displaced persons, whose current figure is between 25,000 and 28,000. Unless the government accepts the proposal, it will not be possible to complete rebuilding by mid-2002 as planned, Cacic said in the lower house on Wednesday. Construction Minister Radimir Cacic will request the government to
increase by 150 percent the number of houses that have to be
rebuilt, whereby some 7,000 would be completed by mid-2002,
requiring the government to earmark $100 million.
The minister said this would solve the issue of all displaced
persons, whose current figure is between 25,000 and 28,000.
Unless the government accepts the proposal, it will not be possible
to complete rebuilding by mid-2002 as planned, Cacic said in the
lower house on Wednesday.
Asked why rebuilding would not be completed according to plan,
Cacic's assistant Ljudevit Herceg said less funds than the planned
750 million kuna (approx. $90.4 million) had been earmarked in the
budget.
The number of houses depends on the money, said Minister Cacic, who
expects the government will second his motion. He added
associations of refugees and returnees approved of the motion.
An agreement with contractors was signed at the ministry today for
the rebuilding of 520 housing buildings, to be financed by Council
of Europe loans.
