ZAGREB, Feb 16 (Hina) - Representatives of some 30 non-governmental
organisations on Friday called on Croatian citizens to gather on
Monday, February 19, in Zagreb's central Ban Jelacic Square for a
rally supporting non-violence and tolerance, to be held under the
slogan "One Hour for the Rule of Law".
Addressing news conference in Zagreb, representatives of the
'Zamir' association, Croatia's Anti-War Campaign and the B.a.b.e.
association dismissed claims in some papers that the rally was a
leftist gathering.
"This will be a gathering of citizens and we will not allow any
partisanship," said Mladen Majetic of 'Zamir', warning that the
voice of citizens could not be heard well enough because the media
were occupied by covering conflicts among the political elites.
According to Vesna Terselic of the Anti-War Campaign, the rally has
been prompted by inadmissible messages which could be heard at last
and this week's rallies of support for retired general Mirko Norac,
who is suspected of war crimes against civilians.
Monday rally is also supported by those soldiers who refuse to be
represented by people behaving in an uncivilised manner or those
living in some strange past, the organisers said.
This weekend, the associations will organise in downtown Zagreb the
signing of a public statement supporting "the rule of law, the state
where nobody makes threats and the state where there are no
privileged ones."
A similar meeting will be held in Pula, it was said at the press
conference.
