ZAGREB, Jan 15 (Hina) - Zivko Korac, a member of Croatian Serb
paramilitary units, suspected of murdering four people, committed
suicide in the village of Vlahovici on Sunday, the Sisak-Moslavina
county police department reported yesterday.
The police had been tracing Korac (aged 43) for almost five years.
After yesterday's tip-off that he was spotted in the Glina area,
some 60 km south of Zagreb, an intensive search was organised. After
a two-hour chase, Korac committed suicide with a hand-grenade after
being encircled by the police.
Korac, born in Veliki Susnjar near Petrinja, south-east of Zagreb,
was suspected of killing four persons, including a married couple.
In 1997 the Sisak County Court issued an arrest warrant after Korac
for the murder of a man in Veliki Susnjar in April 1996.
He was also suspected of killing a married couple in Dodos in the
Sisak area, and another man last year in Mliniste in the Petrinja
area. The police discovered a pit near the site of the murder where
Korac had been hiding. An on-the-spot investigation resulted in
evidence on the basis of which Korac's identity was established.
