The mission will be replaced by a human rights centre, which will be
headed by the Croatian Helsinki Committee in cooperation with the
government.
Over the past nine years, the OHCHR supervised the protection of
human rights in Croatia.
The newly-established human rights centre in Zagreb will be an
independent and autonomous institution serving the Croatian
government, academy, national institutions for human rights, non-
government organisations and others regarding activities
connected with the protection and promotion of human rights, notes
the statement, signed by Commissioner Sergio Vieira de Mello.
This is the first time in its history the OHCHR is closing down a
field office, the statement said.
