Claiming that all parliamentary parties advocate membership in the
EU, Drago Krpina of the Croatian Democratic Union wondered what was
the point of the debate or the "show", as he branded it. The
programme constitutes an attempt by the ruling structure to mask
the utter failure of its policy through political illusionism, he
said.
Many MPs claimed during the debate that Croatia's bids to join the
EU must be based on a country's individual achievements.
Zlatko Canjuga of the Croatian Independent Democrats has nothing
against "us joining the Union as soon as possible together with
Yugoslavia". He said Croatia should consider the regional
approach.
MPs suggested a series of provisions which should amend the
government's programme.
Libra's Hrvoje Kraljevic said the government should be bound to
propose an amended programme by the end of January in which reforms
in higher education and science would be further worked out to meet
European standards.
Parliament should vote on the national programme in the
continuation of the extraordinary session and adopt a resolution on
joining the EU. A task force made up of representatives of all party
benches has been working on this document the whole afternoon.
