At the third convention of disabled war veterans, Varazdinac said
that the majority of rights were not being realised even though the
law has been in force for more than a year. He noted that war
invalids were often referred to as fighters for special privileges
and fake invalids, whereas the suicide rate among them due to the
unresolved status was on the increase.
The HVIDR-a convention was attended by about a hundred delegates
from its county branches. Most government officials invited to
attend, including the president, the premier and president of
parliament, did not turn up, excusing themselves with previously
arranged engagements.
Assistant War Veterans Minister Blazenka Gogic said that the
ministry itself had problems in its work as well as with trying to
implement the law. However, she said, there is not any law that
cannot be changed.
Three guests at the convention, retired General Kresimir Cosic and
attorneys Zeljko Olujic and Kresimir Krsnik, spoke about
parliament's Declaration on the Homeland War and what they said was
discrimination towards the Homeland War by the Hague war crimes
tribunal.
Cosic said that the Hague was not indicting individuals but rather
the actual Homeland War and the creation of the Croatian state.
HVIDR-a in its conclusions at the convention asked the government,
parliament and President to use their power to resist unfounded
charges by the Hague tribunal and to prevent any devaluation or
criminalisation of the Homeland War.
