On this day in 1852, Pope Pius IX issued the "Ubi primum placuit"
bull, raising the Zagreb diocese to the honour of an archdiocese.
With that he founded the Croatian-Slavonian, or rather, Zagreb
ecclesiastic province which included the Djakovo and Bosnian and
Srijem dioceses, the Senj-Modrusa Diocese and the Krizevci
Diocese.
The opening was attended by many Church dignitaries including
Nuncio Giulio Einaudi and representatives in Croatia's public
life.
President of the Metropolitanate committee that organised the
event - Assistant Bishop of Zagreb Josip Mrzljak gave a special
welcome in particular towards Slovak Ambassador to Croatia Jan
Petrik. Bishop Mrzljak reminded that Zagreb's first bishop, Juraj
Haulik was born in Slovakia.
