Following years-long efforts, the Catholic Church in northern
Croatia got its own province (metropolitanate) 150 years ago,
thanks to the endeavours of the then Zagreb Archbishop, Juraj
Haulik, Vice-Roy (Ban) Josip Jelacic, and the Croatian
parliament.
On 11 December 1852, Pope Pius IX proclaimed Zagreb Diocese an
archdiocese, separated it from a Hungarian metropolitanate,
establishing the Croatian-Slavonian church province, i.e. Zagreb
metropolitanate.
This important anniversary will be marked by a solemn mass in Zagreb
Cathedral and many other events.
On 19 May, the incumbent Zagreb Archbishop, Josip Bozanic,
proclaimed this year the year of the Zagreb metropolitanate, ending
on 8 June 2003.
