RIJEKA RIJEKA, Dec 7 (Hina) - Italy's minister in charge of the Italian diaspora, Mirko Tremaglia, on Friday visited the northern Adriatic city of Rijeka, where he opened the reconstructed offices of the Italian community.

Tremaglia was accompanied by Italian Ambassador Fabio Pigliapoco
and the consul-general to Rijeka, Roberto Pietrosanto.
Tremaglia first visited an ossuary with the remains of Italian
soldiers from World War I at the Kozala neighbourhood and an Italian
secondary school. In his address to teachers and students,
Tremaglia said he would see that the Italian parliament approve
Italian citizenship for the children of Italian citizens born in
Croatia as well as an increase in scholarships for Italians from
Croatia studying in Italy.
The reconstruction of the offices of the Italian community at
Rijeka's Modello castle was financed by the Italian government,
with the support of the City of Rijeka.
Tremaglia said that Italy supported Croatia's admission to the
European Union. He stressed the importance of minority protection
as an important element for admission to the EU and pointed to
Rijeka's Italian community as an example of a positive relationship
to minorities.
Attending the opening ceremony along with Minister Tremaglia were
also the head of Rijeka's Italian community, Alessandro Lekovic,
Rijeka mayor Vojko Obersnel, Primorje-Gorski Kotar county prefect
Zlatko Komadina, the head of the Italian Union, Maurizio Tremul,
and MP Furio Radin.
