ZAGREB, Dec 6 (Hina) - The Croatian Institute of Naval Engineering on Friday marked the 100th anniversary of modern submarine engineering in Croatia with a round table and an exhibition of photos and models.

Institute head Nenad Bobanac said that the first torpedo in the
world was designed in Rijeka in 1860, and the Rijeka Torpedo factory
was the first factory in the world which developed and patented the
innovation and supplied the navies of other countries with
torpedoes.
Numerous speakers at the event spoke about the history and
tradition of submarine engineering in Croatia and the world.
The building of submarines in Croatia started in 1906 while the
country was part of the Hapsburg monarchy.
Only the Split shipyard has facilities for the construction of
submarines, but they are currently not in function.
