The bill on community service will be discussed by the government at
its session on Thursday.
The two relevant ministries - Defence and Labour - oppose the idea
of equalising community and military service.
The proposer of the bill, the Justice Ministry, believes that the
arguments used by the two ministries are in contradiction to
recommendations by the European Parliament to equalise community
and military service.
There are more and more young people interested in serving
community service rather than the army.
Namely in 1991, when the institute of objection due to conscience
was introduced, only one such application was submitted. Ten years
later, however, that number has climbed to 4,009.
According to the dynamics the applications are being received, this
year there could be between eight and nine thousand applications.
The community services cost the country 555 kuna (75 euros) per
month and this amount does not include allowances, while the
military service costs 2,162 kuna (294 euros).
