A one-time television reporter, Danica Simcic, replaced Vika
Potocnik as mayor of Ljubljana, but the "left coalition" of
liberals and the combined list of social democrats will retain
power in the capital's city council.
The liberals and the social democrats, which are the chief parties
in the incumbent ruling coalition, registered the biggest failure
in the seaport of Koper, whose new mayor is a young businessman,
Boris Popovic.
Although branded by the "left coalition" a local tycoon with a shady
background, Popovic and his independent list "Koper is Ours" won a
relative majority in the town's council. He promises new economic
growth and ties with business circles in Italy, which has earned him
the moniker "Little Berlusconi".
