LJUBLJANA, Dec 1 (Hina) - Prime Minister Janez Drnovsek, head of the centre-left Liberal Democrats, was elected Slovenia's president on Sunday, exit polls from the second round of the election showed. Polls from two TV channels,
released shortly after voting finished at 19.00 hours, suggested Drnovsek would win either 57.7 or 57.8 percent of the vote in the second election round against his only rival, opposition candidate Barbara Brezigar. Brezigar was running as an independent candidate but was supported by the opposition centre-right Social Democrats. Both candidates support Slovenia's membership of the European Union and NATO. "I am glad that I received support of so many voters and that we can together start a new chapter in Slovenia's history," Drnovsek told Pop TV. Drnovsek, 52, has been Slovenia's prime minister for most of the past 10 years. He will replace Milan Kucan, who has been head of the state of

Drnovsek, 52, has been Slovenia's prime minister for most of the

under the constitution to run again.
