ZAGREB, Nov 19 (Hina) - Retired General Mladen Markac will respond
to a summons by ICTY investigators some time mid December as a
suspect when he is going to make a statement in relation to an
investigation by the Hague-based tribunal about the alleged
serious violations of international humanitarian laws in Croatia
between 1991 and 1997, the general's lawyer Miroslav Separovic
reported on Tuesday. #L#
The statement, issued by the lawyer, notes that Markac went to the
government's office for co-operation with the tribunal and took the
summons by the ICTY prosecution to attend a questioning, scheduled
for the first half in December. He will be interviewed in his
capacity as a suspect.
The order reads that Markac was summonsed so that he could give a
statement in relation to investigations the tribunal was
conducting relating to the responsibility of individuals for
serious violations of international humanitarian laws which, is
claimed, were committed between 1991 and 1997.
Mladen Markac, as an honourable man, commander of special police
units and a general of the Croatian Army, is proud of his
participation in the Homeland War and will respond to the summons
and give his statement, Separovic's press release said.
Markac is one of the founders of the special police units at whose
helm he was from 1990 to 2001.
He was twice assistant interior minister and in the previous period
he was an MP for the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).
Early 2001 he was dismissed from his duty as assistant minister and
later retired.
