A part of the funds will be used for a project on the strengthening
of the existent resources in public health and for a project of
monitoring tuberculosis in Croatia.
A larger sum necessary for the two projects, i.e. 3.8 million
dollars, has been ensured by the Croatian government.
Croatian Health Minister Andro Vlahusic thanked the Open Society's
representatives in Croatia for the funds to be earmarked from this
foundation of Georg Soros.
The project for the strengthening of resources of public health is
to be covered by 2.8 million kuna allocated by the government and
300,000 dollars ensured by the Open Society. The main purpose of
this project is to render the above mentioned school of public
health leading in south-eastern Europe.
The second project will be covered by one million given by the
government and $184,000 given by the Open Society. The aim of this
project is to eradicate tuberculosis in Croatia.
Currently in Croatia 35 out of 100,000 Croatian citizens contract
the TB annually, and the objective of the project, to be carried by
the said hospital, is to cut this number to 10 out of 100,000 (which
is the European average).
