ZAGREB, Oct 18 (Hina) - The Croatian Bloc - Movement for a Modern
Croatia said on Friday that the statement by the president of the
Open Society Institute, George Soros, that "the incumbent
government is democratic, as opposed to (former Croatian President
Franjo) Tudjman's regime", was untrue. #L#
At a recent marking of the 10th anniversary of the Open Society
Institute's Croatian branch, Soros said that he saw "the new
government in Croatia, as opposed to Tudjman's regime" as
democratic, and that "Tudjman's regime was not democratic".
Soros's statements are incompatible with the person of the first
Croatian president, whose immeasurable contribution and role in
the fight for Croatia's independence, freedom for the Croatian
people and the toppling of the Communist and introduction of a
democratic order, was recognised by even the most senior
international officials, the Croatian Bloc said in a statement
Friday.
This political party believes that it is indisputable that Tudjman,
as the founder of the modern Croatian state and the first elected
president, introduced democracy into Croatia .
The Croatian Bloc recalls that Tudjman was elected president by the
will of the Croatian people, twice, and that Communist authorities
before the creation of the Croatian state had sentenced him to
several years in prison because of his dedication to the ideas of
freedom and democracy.
