"Regardless of the imperfections and defeats in its past work, the
United Nations is an irreplaceable mechanism for the preservation
and establishment of peace, and the world after the Second World War
without the UN would be inconceivable," Mesic told numerous
diplomats and public and political figures who convened at Zagreb's
National University Library to mark the UN's 57 years of activity.
The UN is a guarantee of peace, security, development, of a world
where the rights of peoples and individuals are not stamped out,
said Mesic.
He recalled the organisation's "direct and active" role in the
region during the recent conflicts in the former Yugoslav
federation. He also stated that "it was the UN which prevented the
Cold War from turning into a Hot War".
Speaking of current events, Mesic said that "today, when we are
faced with global terrorism, the United Nations is again called on
to respond to world challenges" in which, he added, "it will have
Croatia's full support".
Mesic said that despite almost 60 years of UN activity, there were
still people who wanted to "impose force, chaos and anarchy as the
new world order".
Croatia joined the UN ten years ago and currently chairs its
Economic and Social Council.
