Mesic's testimony against Milosevic, who is charged with war crimes
and genocide, was followed with great interest in Kosovo, where
most of it was broadcast live by the Pristina-based Kohavizion
television and covered by all electronic media.
Thaqi thanked Mesic on behalf of DPK and Kosovo's citizens on what
he described as the dignified stance and high civic courage
demonstrated at the Milosevic trial.
In his letter, the Kosovo leader also expresses his "deep and big
respect" for Mesic and the Croatian people for the assistance
offered to the Kosovo Albanian people in its struggle for
liberation from Serbia.
"Your testimony is a strong argument that the past, dictatorship,
crime, interethnic hatred, genocide and revenge should be erased
from Southeast Europe. The time has come to throw extremist...
leaders on the dump of history and for the peoples of this region to
finally turn towards western values - democracy, freedom, and
development," Thaqi writes.
Pristina's six dailies in Albanian today described Mesic's
testimony as a brave and dignified one by a key witness and a
watershed in international law.
