The past period has shown that the UN is irreplaceable in solving
global issues -- crisis situations and problems which are gaining
global significance, Racan said at the beginning of a government
session on the occasion of the UN Day.
The UN Charter, the organisation's basic document, was adopted on
October 24, 1945.
Among global issues the UN is dealing with is poverty, the violation
of human rights, climatic changes, pollution, armed conflicts and
the increasing danger of terrorism, Racan said.
He recalled that Croatia was admitted into the organisation on May
22, 1992. The UN helped Croatia reaffirm its international
position, he said.
In the past ten years, Croatia was tightly tied with the UN, various
UN missions have passed through its territory, with only one
remaining, the one on Prevlaka peninsula, and its mandate is ending
by the end of this year, Racan said.
He recalled that Croatia had transformed from a country in which UN
missions were active, to a country which itself became an active
participants in peace missions in the world, such as in Sierra Leone
and Eritrea.
Croatia is also an active member of seven UN commissions and
presides over the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), he added.
At the beginning of the government session, Racan reminded of
tomorrow's World Blood Donors' Day, calling on all government
members and employees to join in the action and give blood.
