Racan visited General Bobetko this afternoon. Bobetko has been
indicted by the Hague-based war crimes tribunal and the Croatian
government has been trying to challenge the indictment by legal
means.
In an interview for Croatian Radio, Racan said that he spoke to the
general eye-to-eye and that the general's wife Magdalena was
present during some parts of the conversation.
Racan would not answer directly questions about the general's
condition or the possibility of Bobetko being admitted to hospital.
He said that it would be good if the general could receive full
medical treatment.
"I have already said that it would be good for Bobetko to be admitted
to hospital where he could be treated properly," Racan said.
He noted that Bobetko's admittance to hospital would not make the
government's job of finding the best solution to his situation any
easier.
The premier confirmed that the tribunal's chief prosecutor Carla
del Ponte was to visit Zagreb on October 23.
He said that the Croatian Democratic Union's (HDZ) only postponing
a parliamentary discussion on co-operation with the tribunal would
not help the government.
"This is just a deferral of their proposal and not its withdrawal
from the agenda," Racan said, noting that radicalism would not help
Croatia either this or next week.
Insisting on changing and abolishing the Constitutional Law (on co-
operation with the tribunal) is indeed radicalism, Racan said,
explaining that the international community could think this was an
attempt to radicalise relations between Croatia and the tribunal.
