PODGORICA, Oct 23 (Hina) - Yugoslav Prime Minister Dragisa Pesic on
Wednesday said that information that his government was involved in
arms trading with Iraq was "speculation" and said that there was no
reason for him to resign. #L#
"This is just mere speculation exclusively coming from regime-
influenced newspapers in Montenegro that the federal government
and I are connected to possible arms exports intended for Iraq or
other countries black-listed," Pesic told the Montenegrin MINA
agency.
"If anyone was involved in any such thing then this is without my
knowledge or the knowledge of the federal government. As such there
is no reason for me to resign because I did not have anything to do
with any such incident nor did I approve any such thing nor has any
individual in the federal government," Pesic said.
He added that the government had showed that it would undoubtedly
investigate any allegation of possible illegal arms trading by the
Jugoimport or any other weapons factory and that it would
investigate any such matter to ascertain the full truth.
"If it is shown that the UN Security Council's Resolution 1373 has
been violated in any way or for that matter any other documents that
regulate the trafficking of weapons, all those responsible will pay
the consequences," Pesic said.
