At the ceremony in Vienna, the Special Co-ordinator of the
Stability Pact for South-east Europe, Erhard Busek, bestowed this
year's award on Latin. Busek said Latin was the first Croatian
journalist to be given the prize for the better understanding in
south-east Europe.
He was selected in the competition of 400 reporters in this European
region.
At the award-giving ceremony, a letter of the HRT Director, Mirko
Galic, was read out in which Galic expressed satisfaction with the
fact that "traces of Latin's fruitful work as a journalist and
editor are passing the borders of our country."
A Croatian university professor, Stjepan Malovic, who is a member
of the jury that decided to award Latin, said the Croatian reporter
had received this prize for his attempts to broaden boundaries of
tolerance among people in south-east Europe.
Thanking for the award, Latin said he was sad to see that "in the
21st century we must award people for something which is called
better understanding, tolerance, coexistence and
reconciliation," as south-east Europe should have undergone this
stage much earlier.
"It is a voice which appeals for common sense, tolerance and normal
life," and this voice has been recognised in other parts of Europe,
Latin said.
