ZAGREB, Oct 17 (Hina) - Croatian parliamentary deputies on Thursday
discussed a report on the effects of a merger between the State
Prosecution and the Public Attorney's Office, objecting that the
merger of the two institutions has caused more negative effects
than positive ones. #L#
Presenting the report, Deputy Chief State Prosecutor Dragan
Novosel admitted the drawbacks, and said that the merger did not
produce the expected results due to lack of offices and personnel,
and problems in communication and expert monitoring.
He, however, warned that more comprehensive remarks could be given
once a longer period of time had passed since the merger, which took
place in December last year.
Damir Kajin of the Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS) described the
merger as a cardinal mistake, and claimed that it was undertaken at
the time only to remove Petar Sale (of the Croatian Democratic
Union, HDZ) from the office of the Public Attorney.
Supporting the report, Ljubica Lalic of the Croatian Peasant Party
(HSS) forwarded into parliamentary procedure conclusions which
bind the government to amend the Law on the State Prosecution and
adopt by-laws eliminating undesirable effects of the merger.
The parliament wrapped up Thursday's part of the ongoing session
with a discussion on a proposal of the Croatian Social Liberals
(HSLS) for changes to the Law on the Government. This opposition
party is in favour of a smaller cabinet and changes in the
organisation and scope of activities of ministries.
