ZAGREB, Sept 20 (Hina) - An attorney of retired Gen. Janko Bobetko,
who has been indicted by the UN war crimes tribunal at The Hague,
said on Friday the defence would insist on not having detention set
for his client or that he leave his residence. #L#
"We shall insist that no detention be set," Goran Mikulicic told
Hina over the telephone before visiting Bobetko, a former military
chief-of-staff.
The defence will also seek that the 83-year-old Bobetko be left in
his environment for a series of reasons, including health.
Mikulicic said he conveyed his stance to Hague prosecution
representatives in Zagreb yesterday.
The Hague representatives last night delivered a sealed indictment
against Bobetko to the Croatian government. Neither side has said
what the retired general is charged with. The media speculate the
indictment refers to the Medak pocket operation.
In line with procedure, the government's office for cooperation
with the Hague tribunal has to establish if the indictment is
formally justified. The document is then forwarded to the Justice
Ministry, which in turn sends it to the competent county court.
The time limit for said procedure is not specified, although the
Hague tribunal's rules seek that it be done within a reasonable
deadline.
Mikulicic said his meeting with Bobetko today was the usual
attorney-client meeting. Mikulicic is also expected to meet the
other lawyers appointed by Bobetko to agree about further action.
