According to law, official campaigns begin 30 days prior to
elections. The upcoming ones were called for November 10.
According to the electoral commission, there are 1,609,000 people
eligible to vote in Slovenia.
Public opinion polls conducted to date indicate that Prime Minister
Janez Drnovsek, who definitely confirmed his candidacy on
Thursday, stands the best chance in the presidential election.
Amongst the candidates running against Drnovsek, who more than
likely will go into a second round, is former state prosecutor
Barbara Brezigar, who is running as an independent candidate with
the support of two opposition parties.
The electoral headquarters of former parliament president Franc
Bucar announced it managed to collect the 5,000 votes required to
run in the presidential ballot.
Amongst party candidates for the successor of Slovenia's current
president, Milan Kucan, include nationalist representative Zmago
Jelincic and an MP of the Associated List of Social Democrats
(ZSLD), Lev Kreft, who does not have much of a chance, according to
opinion polls.
It seems that former central bank governor France Arhar, who was
backed by right centre parties and Catholic circles, will not make
it to the second round either.
