ZAGREB, Oct 4 (Hina) - Croatian MPs on Friday commended an
additional report on privatisation audits by the State Audit
Office, and reiterated that illegal activities discovered in
privatised companies must be punished. #L#
The additional report was compiled at parliament's request
following a summer debate on the State Audit Office's half-year
report, when parliament asked for additional reports on
responsible persons in companies in which irregularities were
discovered and data on charges pressed.
The additional report states the names of persons responsible for
privatisation processes, the names of legal or physical persons who
evaluated companies, and data on ownership and the time of
privatisation.
A total of 232 unpunished irregularities were established in 73 of
100 audited companies, chief state auditor Sima Krasic said,
stating that sanctions for most irregularities were not stipulated
by law.
A total of 31 charges against 38 persons have been pressed with the
competent state prosecutor's office for irregularities
committed.
Economic offence charges have been pressed against five legal and
13 physical persons, while 25 offence charges have been pressed
against 24 companies, said Krasic.
The benches, especially from the Opposition, stated that the audits
were done too late, that they were not transparent, that the public
continued to be suspicious of them, and that the additional report
did not say who had taken part in illegal activities.
The benches agreed the performance of the State Audit Office was
good and that the Office could not be criticised for slowness in
privatisation audits, as well as that its demands for additional
expert personnel should be met.
Parliament will vote on the additional report in the continuation
of the current session.
