Handing Bobetko the charter, Gospic City Council president Milan
Stimac reminded about the general's contribution to the defence of
the town.
"After Operation Medak Pocket the residents of Gospic were finally
able to live normally, because this limited operation pushed the
enemy further back and we were no longer within range of mortars,"
Stimac said.
Commenting on the Hague indictment against Bobetko, mayor Milan
Kolic said: "Knowing you as an honourable man, we support you and
believe and hope that you will also win this battle, which is one of
the more difficult ones you have had".
Thanking the residents of Gospic for the charter, Bobetko repeated
that he would not surrender to the tribunal as, he said, he had no
right to let his people and killed Croatian soldiers down.
"I will not give up, I defended my people and will continue
defending it with deeds, not with tears in my eyes, but honourably,
the way I have lived," Bobetko said, adding that Croatia again faced
a turning point and that all were now responsible for its future.
