ZAGREB, Sept 22 (Hina) - Almost 250,000 Croatian nationals and
their families earn their living abroad. #L#
According to the results of the 2001 Croatian census, a total of
247,082 Croatians (this includes those who work and the number of
their family members) were living and earning their bread abroad .
Of this number, 156,329 were those who were employed.
According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, over 90 percent of
them are at "temporary" work, but this temporary employment abroad
usually lasts a significant number of years.
Germany is, as expected, the first-ranked country according to the
number of Croatian Gast-Arbeiters, i.e. guest workers. There are
113,000 Croatians there, accounting for 46 percent of the total
number of Croatians and their families at work abroad.
The second-placed is Austria with 26,000 Croatians and their
families at work.
It is followed by Switzerland (nearly 23,000), and Italy (less than
12,000).
As regards other continents, Canada has 10,000 such Croatians and
the United States nearly 7,000, while Australia 5,000.
