SPLIT, Sept 20 (Hina) - The president of a war veteran association,
called the Central Headquarters for the Defence of the Homeland
War's Dignity, on Friday said Croatia was faced with a monstrous
indictment against the war-time Croatian army's chief-of-staff,
General Janko Bobetko. #L#
Lieutenant Mirko Condic called on all Croatian citizens to join in
acts which would be organised by this association.
"Let's have all of us become the headquarters for the defence of
general Bobetko, as by defending him, we defend ourselves, our
past, present and future," Condic said at a news conference in the
biggest Croatian coastal city of Split.
The vice-president of the headquarters, Mirko Klaric, announced
"all forms of civil disobedience - from blockades of roads, riots
throughout the country to political pressure," as to prevent
General Bobetko's extradition to the Hague-based Tribunal.
"Should the authorities insist on Gen. Bobetko's hand-over, we
shall defend him by all means and his home will become a
fortification, and Racan and his communists will have to come
(there) to take him," Klaric added.
For Klaric, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic's statement that Gen.
Bobetko has to go to The Hague like any other citizen, is shameful,
and Klaric said that it was not about one man but a commander of the
Croatian army and the legitimacy of the Croatian Army's liberating
operations were brought into question.
"If this becomes questionable, then the Croatian State we have
created will become questionable as well," Klaric said.
An open letter was handed over at the news conference in which the
people are called to resist any attempt of the ICTY to indict an
anti-Fascist fighter, General Bobetko, for war crimes.
