SPLIT, Sept 20 (Hina) - The trial of eight former military police
accused of war crimes committed at the Lora military prison in Split
in 1992 resumed at the Split County Court on Friday. #L#
Witness Luka Orsulic, a former military policeman, said he
remembered an escape attempt by two prisoners (Nenad Knezevic and
Gojko Bulovic) but not their names or other details.
Given a report compiled after an investigation into the two deaths
and the fact that they were the only two deaths at Lora, prosecutor
Michele Squiccimare expressed disbelief at Orsulic's inability to
remember an event in which he had taken part.
The witness said that many people were dying at the time and that the
incident should be considered in the context of that time.
Three defendants, Tomislav Dujic, Josip Bikic and Miljenko Bajic,
are being tried in absentia. Dujic, the first on the indictment, was
the former prison's warden. He has been at large since the trial
started. Bajic and Bikic are on the run since August, when the
Supreme Court quashed a ruling on the release of seven of those
accused.
The trial resumes on Monday with the testimonies of five witnesses
from Serbia.
