VUKOVAR AUTHORITIES AGAINST SCHOOLS WITH TEACHING IN SERBIAN VUKOVAR, Sept 19 (Hina) - Vukovar authorities on Thursday debated an initiative to form schools in the Serbian language in this eastern town, concluding that elementary
schools there should remain uniform institutions with teaching in Croatian and class sections with teaching in the Serbian language and alphabet.

The above-mentioned initiative was forwarded into the Education
and Sports Ministry by the Joint Council of eastern Croatia's
predominantly Serb municipalities. The ministry supported the
initiative.
Schools in the Vukovar area should remain uniform institutions in
compliance with laws on education in the language and script of
national minorities and on the use of the language and script of
national minorities, town authorities concluded.
The conclusion was supported by six councillors from the Croatian
Democratic Union, but turned down by three from the Independent
Democratic Serb Party.
