ISTRIA COUNTY EXPECTED MORE OF THE RACAN-DRNOVSEK AGREEMENT

PULA, Sept 10 (Hina) - The Istria County prefect and the president of the Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS), Ivan Jakovcic, said on Tuesday evening that he expected more from the agreement between Croatian and Slovene premiers Ivica Racan and Janez Drnovsek about a temporary maritime regime.
#L# "My first impression is that the agreement contains elements that could deteriorate the current situation but there are some elements, if they are agreed to reasonably, that could definitely resolve relations between Croatian and Slovene fishermen," Jakovcic said, commenting on today's meeting between the two premiers. County Prefect Jakovcic said that he would try to work on the positive elements of the latest agreement and called on Croatian fishermen to be patient and do the same which could then lead to a solution. "Our aim is to completely the same, namely to protect the interest of fishermen and the sea and maintain good neighbourly relations," Jakovcic said. The president of the association of fishermen from Buje region, Daniel Kolec, commented on the Croatian-Slovene joint supervision of Piran Bay and stressed that it was necessary first to see what area this referred to. According to Kolec, if this referred to territorial waters below 275 degrees - i.e. the line controlled by Slovene police, Croatian fishermen would not put up with Slovene police supervising them. Commenting on Tuesday's agreement on regulating free fishing for fishermen issued with licences in accordance to the Agreement on Cross-Border Traffic and Co-operation, Kolec said that not one Croatian fisherman would apply for such a licence because the section of the agreement that regulates fishing for Croatian and Slovene fishermen needed to be changed drastically on the basis of reciprocity. He claimed that Slovene fishermen in a joint statement issued on Saturday stressed that in practise and reality reciprocity in fact did not exist. Kolec confirmed that they would once again meet with Slovene fishermen on Sunday as agreed. (hina) sp it
