The both sides stressed that the basic problem for activities is the
lack of financial and material resources, which results in
inadequate assistance.
Arlovic expressed Croatia's gratefulness to the UNHCR for
everything that organisation has done to ease the consequences of
the war and to return the people to their homes, the statement
continues.
At the moment, Croatia has 44 thousand families that are receiving
assistance and this number could be doubled in the next two to three
years. Namely, many of them who wish to return to Croatia came from
areas that were devastated in the war and Croatia does not have the
means to satisfy their needs, Arlovic explained.
The UNHCR Mission Chief emphasised that the organisation is
currently going through a financial crisis and this is affecting
its activities in the entire world.
He also stressed that the organisation's basic objective is to help
return people to their homes in the region and 2003 should be the
year when this process should be successfully concluded.
The Croatian official and the UNHCR delegation also considered a
Bill on Asylum which should be presented to the Sabor at the first
autumn session with the intention to have the law adopted before the
year's end, the statement concluded.
