ILOK, Aug 26 (Hina) - Vukovar-Srijem County Prefect Nikola Safer
and the chairman of the Assembly of the Autonomous Region of
Vojvodina, Nenad Canak, signed a protocol on cooperation in the
eastern Croatian town of Ilok on Monday. #L#
The protocol obliges the two sides to develop and strengthen
relations on the political, economic, cultural and other fields
between Vukovar-Srijem County and Vojvodina based on traditional
Euro-regional cooperation.
The protocol also relates to protection of national minority
rights, cross-border cooperation and traffic.
Also foreseen is a combined commission which will propose measures
to avoid incidental situations along the border and assist state
border commissions to initial a demarcation line as soon as
possible, to the benefit of both countries.
Asked by Belgrade journalists whether Belgrade authorities were
notified of the signing of the protocol, Canak claimed that the
Autonomous Region of Vojvodina with its 2.1 million residents did
not require approval from the federal government for co-operation
at this level.
He added, however, that the Yugoslav Foreign Ministry was notified
of the signing of the protocol.
Safer emphasised the great importance of the protocol on co-
operation between Vojvodina and Vukovar-Srijem County, adding that
this was bringing into reality matters that were discussed with
Vojvodina authorities more than a year ago.
He added that the protocol should help in avoiding incidents on the
Croatian-Yugoslav border such as the one that occurred a month ago
on the Sarengrad river isle.
