PRISTINA, Aug 8 (Hina) - UNMIK police forces in collaboration with
KFOR on Wednesday night attempted to arrest Kosovo Serb leader
Milan Ivanovic after a warrant was issued for his arrest charging
him with attempted murder, the UN administration for Kosovo
reported on Thursday. #L#
Ivanovic said that the UN police broke into his homeearly in the
morning with the intention of arresting him, but they only found his
mother there.
Ivanovic is charged for organising violent protests in the northern
part of Kosovska Mitrovica which is mostly inhabited by Serbs. In
protests in April more than 22 UN police oficers were injured after
they were attacked with grenades and sniper fire.
The UNMIK mission called Ivanovic to surrender to competent
authorities, as a warrant had been issued charging him with
attempted murder.
The warrant was issued by an international investigative judge at
the request of the international prosecutor in response to events
during violent protests by Serb nationals in Kosovska Mitrovica in
April, UNMIK spokeswoman, Susan Maunel, said.
Doctor Ivanovic was informed of the warrant and should surrender to
the authorities. The warrant was issued July 30, Manuel said.
UN civil administrator for Kosovo Michael Steiner confirmed the
attempted arrest, but rejected Ivanovic's claims that the arrest
was carried out with the aim of intimidating Serbs, stating that he
was not responsible for issuing warrants.
Steiner believes that everybody should agree with one thing, that
is, with the need of respecting recommendations by legitimate
institutions.
