The government's resignation was a manoeuvre to oust the second
strongest ruling coalition partner, the Social Liberals (HSLS),
said Ivo Sanader of the HDZ (Croatian Democratic Union).
Democratic Centre's (DC) Mate Granic stated the former government
had been unstable, indecisive, and often unfair. He does not expect
the new cabinet will last long or succeed in reforms.
According to Damir Kajin of the Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS),
citizens have to be dissuaded from believing that the new coalition
government is just a change of form and not content.
Social Democrat (SDP) Zdravko Tomac also supported the new Racan
cabinet.
During today's debate, opposition MPs voiced a series of objections
to both the programme and the make-up of what they called the new-
old government.
The motion to appoint Zeljka Antunovic minister of defence elicited
the most attention and objections.
Criticism was also expressed to the appointment of Gvozden Flego to
the post of science minister.
Ante Beljo of the HDZ said the government was controlled from abroad
and that it was some globalists' branch-office.
Dorica Nikolic of the HSLS noted that the new government's
programme made no mention of the media and media freedom.
Today's debate ended a confidence vote in the new Ivica Racan
cabinet.
