MOSTAR/SARAJEVO, July 23 (Hina) - Bosnia-Herzegovina's Electoral
Commission Tuesday officially confirmed that it had approved the
candidacy of Fikret Abdic for the Bosniak (Muslim) member of the
country's collective Presidency at the election in October this
year. #L#
Abdic was proposed on behalf of his party the Democratic National
Community of BiH.
Abdic's candidacy was contentious because of criminal proceedings
against him in Karlovac based on charges laid by the High Public
Prosecutor in Bihac accusing him of war crimes.
The charges were transferred to the jurisdiction of the Croatian
judiciary based on an agreement of legal assistance in criminal
matters. Abdic is also a Croatian citizen.
A member of the Electoral Commission Branko Peric explained that
Abdic had surrendered himself to the police where it was
ascertained that he therefore did not refuse to oblige an order
issued by the court.
The Bosnian electoral law does not allow persons who do not respond
voluntarily to court orders to run in elections, Peric added.
