The UNMOP task to observe the demilitarisation of Prevlaka will end
on October 15.
The Croatian permanent representative at the UN in New York,
Ambassador Ivan Simonovic, said that this was the first time since
the establishment of the UNMOP that its mandate was being extended
only for three months.
According to Article 3 of the Resolution, the Security Council is
ready to discuss the duration of the mandate even before the
expiration of the deadline, should Croatia and Yugoslavia manage to
reach an agreement.
"It is obvious that the Security Council wants the UNMOP mandate to
end quickly and successfully," Simonovic said. He said it was not
necessary to solve all contentious issue, but those which represent
a threat to peace and security. Simonovic positively assessed the
Security Council's recommendation to accelerate negotiations
between Zagreb and Belgrade.
In an interview to Hina, the Croatian Ambassador expressed hope
that the authorities in Serbia and Montenegro would interpret the
Resolution and its messages in an equally constructive manner.
