ZAGREB, July 8 (Hina) - Ivo Sanader, the leader of the strongest

party's stand was that every new government must have the support of
the electorate. #L#
Sanader admitted that the set-up of a new government would be legal
and in compliance with the constitution if it obtained the majority
of votes (over 76) of members of the parliament, but he questioned
its legitimacy.
Therefore, the HDZ proposes new elections, as the current coalition
government without Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS) has no
longer legitimacy, Sanader told reporters after the HDZ delegation
held consultations with Mesic on the new prime minister designate
on Monday morning.
He reiterated that the HDZ would not participate in any combination
on the formation of a new government.
The policy of the coalition turned to be a total failure in the
political, economic and social sense, the country is in a deep
crisis, and we, like a majority of voters, do not believe that the
Social Democratic Party (SDP) with the remaining coalition
partners can bail out the country, the HDZ head said.
The HDZ believes that even if they succeed in forming the new
government, the coalition partners will soon enter a new crisis and
therefore this opposition party urges early elections.
Sanader told reporters that he had notified Mesic of this stand.
Asked whether he had got an impression that the decision had already
been made on the new PM designate, Sanader answered that the head of
state was continuing with the consultations, but the HDZ president,
like a majority in Croatia, supposed Racan would be the new PM
designate.
