ZAGREB, July 7 (Hina) - Croatia's President Stjepan Mesic will
start two-day consultations on the appointment of the new prime
minister designate on Monday morning. #L#
His consultations with the Social Democrat Party (SDP) are
scheduled for 09.00 am Monday. Later Mesic will receive
representatives of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and then at
noon of the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS).
The schedule of the consultations is based on the number of
parliamentary seats a certain party holds.
After the consultations on Monday and Tuesday, Mesic is expected to
announce his decision on the new prime minister designate on
Wednesday. The Croatian head of state said there would be no
prolongation in this time term.
According to Article 97 of the constitution, the President of the
Republic entrusts the mandate for the establishment of the new
government to the person who enjoys the confidence of a majority of
MPs on the basis of the division of seats among parliamentary
parties and consultations he holds with party leaders.
The President's Office has already received a letter with
signatures of 84 MPs from different parties, who expressed their
willingness to support the resigned premier Ivica Racan as the new
PM designate.
The new PM designate is obliged within 30 days after he takes the
office, to form a new government and present his cabinet and
programme to the parliament. Sabor will then hold a vote of
confidence in the new government.
The parliament's president, Zlatko Tomcic, has confirmed that an
extraordinary parliamentary session is likely to take place
between 15 July and 1 August for this purpose.
